High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
In our classroom:
- Differentiation of content, learning activities and resources to develop each student's unique talents.
- We notice these students early. They may learn quickly or show strong skills in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strength.
- Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.
- Challenge Levels for mathematics are provided every day to cater for a diversity of learning needs.
Every student is individual, so opportunities are flexible and diverse.
- Students deepen strengths through debating, academic competitions and workshops with industry partners.
- Talent in creative and performing arts is celebrated through opportunities to join dance and choir groups with performances.
- Leadership grows through a variety of opportunities, including a Student Representative Council (SRC). Leadership workshops are offered each year, and students can nominate for roles as House Captains or Leaders with the Junior Aboriginal Education Team- Mighty Burras.
- Daily life invites curiosity and belonging, with Library and passive play available at lunch, together with craft club, chess club and garden club.
- Sport matters too, with PSSA sport, training, coaching and house competitions as well as many opportunities for our students to represent Hunter School Sports Association on a zone and level in a variety of sports.
Kurri Kurri Kids participate in a wide range of statewide programs to expand their hidden talents and potential. Students participate in opportunities such as:
- NSW PSSA Sport Pathways
- Debating Competitions
- Chess Tournaments
- Premier's Reading Challenge
- Writing Competitions
- Public Speaking Competitions
